INTERIOR TRIM PAINT SERVICES

Linear Feet/Surface Area
The amount of paint required for painting trim depends on the surface area. One gallon of paint will cover a surface area of 400 square feet.
First, we measure a rooms dimension to determine the linear feet of the baseboard molding and crown molding. Next we multiply the total linear feet by the width of the molding to calculate the total surface area. Window dimensions are measured the same way.
In addition, we count the number of doors to be painted. We add the calculations of the doors and door frames to the total trim surface area to estimate the amount of paint needed.
Type Of Paint
Depending on whether the existing paint on all trim is a latex based paint or oil will make a difference in price. Oil based paints and primers contain VOC’s and require the painter to use a ventilator mask to protect from the strong fumes.
Oil based painting requires more skill. If applied incorrectly, the paint can sag to the floor while it cures over night. Latex paint will not bond to oil based paint. The trim must first be primed with an oil based bonding primer. Only then can the trim be painted in latex paint.
We will wipe the trim with a wet rag soaked in rubbing alcohol to determine what type of paint currently exists.. If the paint does not come off, then the current paint is oil-based.
Existing Condition
Older homes often have multiple layers of paint on trim. In this situation, it may take more preparation. First, you must scrape and sand the trim to leave a smoother finish. Then the trim should be dusted before painting.
When there are dogs in the home, there may be a case where the dog has left chew marks on the trim. In this case, the marks must be patched with wood filler and sanded.
On the other hand, if new molding has just been installed it will require time to fill all nail holes with puddy and caulk all seams. Raw wood requires primer before painting two additional coats of paint. In addition, changing a dark color trim to white will also take multiple coats to cover.
